Striving for a higher life

Education is vital to a thriving society and it is critical for breaking the cycle of poverty. Each child represents the future - the future of the community, the country and in turn, the future of the world. However, millions of children do not have access to the education or support they need to reach their full potential. This is why the Higher Life Foundation has shifted its entire focus to sponsoring education.

The Higher Life Foundation aims to reduce the harrowing reality that out of 128 million school-aged children in Africa, 17 million will never attend school. The Foundation’s mission is to invest in Africa's future by empowering 10 million vulnerable children through education and creating study, training and mentorship opportunities. It aims to do this through its Basic Education Programme that delivers need-based scholarships targeted at orphans and vulnerable children through the Capernaum Trust and the Talent Development Programme that delivers the Joshua Nkomo Scholarship, a merit-based scholarship.

The education situation in Africa is dire, but perhaps what is most shocking is that 37 million children in Africa in school will learn so little while there, that they are not better off than the children that never attended school. This is due to lack of course materials, missing weeks of school due to lack of finances or not having the support in class to truly grasp new material. The Higher Life Foundation has a range of support programmes to assist students with the support they need to thrive while in school.

To help reduce drop out rates, the organisation has a Guardianship and Pastoral Care Programme which provides psychosocial support and essential life skills to orphaned children. The Foundation’s Ruzivo project is making course material more accessible through software that customises local primary school syllabi and delivers them online, thus further widening access to education to millions of children. In addition, the Health and Crisis Support Programme works to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and health crises in communities.

The Higher Life Foundation takes a holistic approach to education and provides students with all the tools they need to succeed. It is empowering young people to help reach their full potential and deepen their desire to learn because education is a powerful driver of development and is one of the strongest instruments for reducing poverty and improving health, gender equality, peace and promoting stability.
